What is a Kitchen Order Ticket (KOT)?

A Kitchen Order Ticket — KOT for short — is the slip that tells the kitchen exactly what to cook for which table. In a busy restaurant it is the single most important piece of communication: the waiter takes the order, the kitchen needs it word for word, and the bill at the end must match what was actually served.

Most small restaurants in India still run this on paper or by voice. Slips get lost, handwriting is misread, an item gets forgotten in the rush, and the bill and the kitchen never quite agree. A KOT system in your billing software fixes this: the order is typed once, the kitchen gets a clear ticket automatically, and the same order becomes the bill — nothing is written twice.

In KhataBuddy, KOT is not an add-on. It is part of the restaurant plan and works from the counter, the captain app and QR ordering alike.

Why it matters

Why restaurants switch to a KOT system

Four things change on day one.

Orders reach the kitchen in seconds

The KOT prints or appears on the kitchen screen the moment the order is saved. The cook starts before the waiter has walked back.

No missed or wrong items

Every ticket is item-wise, with quantity and notes like “less spicy” or “no onion”. What was ordered is exactly what gets cooked.

Counter and kitchen stay in sync

Both sides see the same ticket number, table and items — so nobody has to walk over and ask “what did Table 5 order?”

Handles the rush calmly

Ten tables ordering at once becomes ten neat tickets in order. Peak hours stop feeling like chaos.

How it works

How KOT works in KhataBuddy

Three steps — the same whether the order comes from the counter, a captain’s phone or a customer’s QR scan.

1

Take the order

Pick the table, add the dishes with quantities, and type any special instructions. Voice billing works here too — just say the order.

2

Send the KOT

Tap “Send KOT”. The ticket prints on the kitchen printer and/or appears on the kitchen display — with the table number, KOT number, time and who took the order.

3

Add more, then bill

Guests order dessert? Add it to the same table and a new KOT goes out. When they are done, the running order becomes the bill in one tap — no re-typing.

Paper slips vs KOT in KhataBuddy

Handwritten slips

KhataBuddy KOT

Waiter writes the order, walks to the kitchen, hands over a slip

Order is saved once and the KOT reaches the kitchen instantly

Handwriting gets misread; “2 naan” becomes “7 naan”

Clear printed or on-screen ticket, item by item, with quantities

Special requests are forgotten in the rush

Notes like “less spicy” print right under the item

Bill is written again at the end — and often does not match

The same order becomes the bill; nothing is typed twice

No record of who took the order or when

Every KOT shows the time, the table and the staff member

In detail

Everything the KOT handles for you

Print, display, or both

Send KOTs to a thermal printer in the kitchen, show them on the kitchen order display, or do both. Works with standard 2-inch and 3-inch ESC/POS printers, over USB or Bluetooth.

Table number, KOT number and time on every ticket

The kitchen always knows which table an order belongs to and in what sequence it arrived, so food goes out in the right order to the right table.

Item notes and add-ons

Extra cheese, no onion, Jain, less oil — type it once on the order and it prints under that item on the KOT, not as an afterthought the waiter has to remember.

Multiple KOTs per table

Guests rarely order everything at once. Add starters, then mains, then dessert — each addition goes out as its own KOT while the table keeps one running bill.

Dine-in, takeaway and delivery

Takeaway and delivery orders get a KOT too, marked clearly so the kitchen packs instead of plating. One flow for every order type.

From any device

Send KOTs from the counter computer, from a captain’s Android phone or straight from a customer’s QR order — all land in the same kitchen queue.

Who uses KOT software

Any kitchen that gets more than one order at a time.
